Canyonlands: The Maze Unit

Climbing out of the Maze

My March trip into the Maze was amazing.  Flew to SLC, got in a friend's truck, and headed south.  First was a revisit to the Great gallery in Horseshoe Canyon.  I was last in this spot 30 years ago and it is still magical.  And we had it to ourselves, a benefit of the early March timing.  Next was the Maze.  With the switchbacks of the Flint Trail still covered in snow we had to take a three-hour detour down another set of recently reopened switchbacks, and to a great lonely campsite on BLM land outside the NRA.  We spent the next night at Maze overlook and enjoyed a day of hiking in the Maze.  Next we were off to the Golden Staircase for two nights and more exploring.  Our final morning greeted us with five inches of wet snow and a dilemma; do we wait it out until the snow melted and the roads dried or make a run for it in the snow under the theory that snow covered clay was better than wet clay?  We chose to make a run for it and, after engaging every traction option available in a Toyota Tacoma, we made it out.  This area deserves much more time and a focus on a much smaller portion.  I'll be back, hopefully without the snow.

Crater Lake in Winter

Crater Lake

Crater Lake in the winter is a treat.  Especially so when the last few miles of road up to the rim are closed due to a recent blizzard.  We snow shoed up in the morning and, for a few hours, had the place virtually to ourselves.  We were treated to views of the lake - also a treat in February - and much lighter winds than the forecast suggested.  It was a special day for sure.
